Evidence for God from Science Newsletter June, 2001

Greetings in the name of the Lord! This is the latest edition of the update for the Evidence for God from Science website. There are several new additions to the site, in both the apologetics and doctrine/theology departments.

I was recently e-mailed with a request to appear on a local radio program, Lynnn Harper on the Pulse (San Diego, KSDO 1130 AM). The topic was to be "The God Called Science." I guess the producer found the site through a search for "God" and "science." It was basically a show asking if we put too much faith in science. I thought that this would be a good opportunity for Ken Samples, the Reasons To Believe philosopher, to respond and got him scheduled to do that show. However, in going to their website, I discovered that they were doing a program called "Who am I? Are we our bodies, our minds, our spirits." So I talked to the producer of the show and will be speaking this Thursday, June 7 between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. It is a great opportunity to share the Christian faith. Please pray that I will be led by the Spirit.

The second annual Reasons To Believe Creation Conference, "Beyond Genesis 1" will be held June 28-30 in Southern California. Last year's conference was great. I hope that some of you can make it, so that I can meet you personally. I will be helping out with questions or serving at the book table, so stop by on one of the three days. You can sign up online (http://www.reasons.org) or by calling (800) 482-7836).

Apologetics

In the tradition of Missing the Obvious, there is a new page that examines the common atheist complaint that God has not personally revealed Himself to them. The atheist charge is somewhat valid, since God does not generally communicate with those who close their spirit to His leading. However, the Bible says, and those who are disciples of Jesus Christ can confirm, that God does reveal Himself to believers, and we know Him through the Holy Spirit. Find out the answer to the question, "Do you see your brain?"

In following links from the NASA website, I came across the website of an artificial intelligence program that had won the Loebner Prize award (2000) for the best imitation of human conversations by a computer program. The computer program, called A.L.I.C.E., will engage you in conversation over the Internet. It has learned what it knows through conversations with people, which are added to its database. I decided to ask this program what it thought about God. To my surprise, the program not only believes that God exists, but believes that He created the universe. Not only that, but the program believes itself to be a Protestant Christian and believes that Jesus is the Son of God. The new page has been so popular that people from alicebot.org have come to GodAndScience.org from their web stats to see what the fuss is about. See what A.L.I.C.E. has to say about God and then ask it (her?) your own questions:

People who have no assurance of their salvation fear death. I know, since I was afraid of death before I put my faith in Jesus Christ. If there is no God, then death would be merely a ceasing of existence, with nothing to fear. However, if Christianity is true, then those who do not believe should fear death, since the fate of believers and non-believers is quite different.

Three months ago I unveiled a new page challenging non-believers to design a universe better than the one God created. So far, I have had only one response - one which was very superficial and self-contradictory (from "Smoke Some Grass"). Although I have received and seen many complaints about the design of this universe, the atheists are not jumping at the opportunity to offer a better design. Could it be that the task is more difficult than they believe?

Evolution/Design

Contrary to the claims of a recent study, the multiregional model, which states that modern humans evolved from several different groups of hominids (including Neanderthals) that interbred at some point to produce modern humans, fails to explain the genetics seen in modern humans, Neanderthals, and early modern humans. The biblical model (stating that humans arose from one lineage from a single geographic location) still fits all the data better than the multiregional model.

"Adam lived 930 years and then he died." The mere assertion that humans could live more than 900 years-as Genesis 5:5 states-seems, for many people, nothing short of absurdity. The mention of long life spans in Genesis 5 hinders these people from openly exploring the Christian faith. Unable to accept 900-year human life spans, skeptics and others view the Bible as unreliable, a book of human myth rather than divine revelation. However, recent studies in biology provide an explanation of how God could have originally designed humans to live much longer than they do now.

Alan Feduccia, an avian evolutionist who has shaken up the field of avian evolution has made some new charges against fellow evolutionists who have ignored the rather convincing evidence that falsifies one of the central dogmas of evolution - that birds are descended from theropod dinosaurs. According to Dr. Feduccia, "In spite of developmental evidence that overwhelmingly supports a II-III-IV bird hand, in contrast to the I-II-III theropod hand [8,9], paleontologists will do whatever is necessary to accommodate the cladogram." Other evolutionists readily admit that "there are no other suitable candidates for avian ancestors," which is why they are reluctant to accept the new data, since, in essence, it falsifies evolution. Doctrine

Several pages have been added in the prolife category. Having published a page on the biblical basis for the prolife position several years ago, I finally got around to writing a page on the scientific basis for the prolife position. The page is a frank discussion about human development and exactly what abortion destroys. Not recommended for the squeamish:

Two law professors published in May, 2001 a study that reports to show that abortion has reduced crime in the United States by reducing fertility among certain groups that are more prone to crime. According to the authors, "Given that homicide rates of black youths are roughly nine times higher than those of white youths, racial differences in the fertility effects of abortion are likely to translate into greater homicide reductions." Abortion is now the politically correct means of advocating legal eugenics among liberals. Groups like Planned Parenthood are using abortion to reduce the fertility rates among minorities so that "unwanted" children and not brought into the world.
