Skeptics Forum!

Dr. Hugh Ross leads the Paradoxes Sunday School at Sierra Madre Congregational Church. Every few months the class does a "skeptics forum" which is completely devoted to answering questions from skeptics (and Christians) regarding the Christian faith. This Sunday and Monday the two events will be streamed live on the Internet. So, even if you can't make it to Sierra Madre California, you can watch live and email your questions during the event. Please invite your skeptical friends and acquaintances to watch and ask Dr. Ross their questions! Here are the dates and times:

  1. Sunday, June 24 at 11:15 a.m.-1:00 p.m. PDT
  2. Monday, June 25 at 7:00-9:00 p.m. PDT

Christianity's Dangerous Ideas

7 Truths that Changed the World: Discovering Christianity's Most Dangerous IdeasKenneth R. Samples is the resident philosopher and theologian at Reasons To Believe, a Christian think-tank primarily devoted to science apologetics. Samples' latest book, 7 Truths that Changed the World, is an apologetic for the Christian faith's central beliefs and values. The New Atheism movement says that Christianity did indeed influence philosophy and morals, but that those ideas are harmful. Is it true that the ideas of Christianity are bad for people? Ken Samples takes on the question of Christianity's "dangerous ideas" and says, "If as a Christian you find that these dangerous ideas don't rock your worldview, then maybe your faith has become far too safe." Samples' book is organized into seven main sections (one for each "dangerous idea"), consisting of two chapters each.  More...

Christian Environmentalists?

Dan Story, author of the book, Should Christians be Environmentalists?, is a former agnostic, turned Christian. Soon after becoming a Christian, Story felt compelled to write Christian apologetics materials. Some thirty years later Story has written his first work on environmentalism from a Christian perspective. It is probably good Story took so much time to get back to his environmentalist past, since he is now firmly grounded in biblical theology, so that he handles the topic with the skill of a seasoned apologist. The book is not so much a to-do list of things Christians can do to care for God's creation as it is an apologetic to the Church to become leaders in the field of creation care. Story's target audience is Bible-believing Christians, since there is a biblical emphasis throughout the book.  More...

Answers for atheists

Analytic thinking & belief

A recent scientific study made the news, claiming that merely thinking analytically will tend to diminish one's faith. I for one was taken back by the study, since my full-time job (research scientist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) constantly involves analytic thinking and I have what I consider to be a strong faith. If it were true that a few minutes of analytic thinking could diminish one's faith, then one would expect that my 30+ years of such thinking would have utterly devastated my faith. Maybe something else was going on in this study? More...

Authenticity of the Bible

10 commandments

Skeptics have claimed that Old Testament writers exaggerated or made up the existence of the Hebrew kingdoms described in the Old Testament, including kings David and Solomon. However, recent archeological evidence has shown that the written Hebrew language was in existence by the 10th century B.C. The archaeological site of Khirbet Qeiyafa is the location of a massively fortified city of megalithic stones 6-9 feet tall.  In 2008, two city gates were discovered, which was very unusual for cities of that time (which usually had only one gate). This unusual characteristic clearly identified the city as being the biblical Sha‛ărayim, which has the meaning of "double gate." The city is mentioned three times in the Old Testament (Joshua 15:36, 1 Samuel 17:52 and 1 Chronicles 4:31). The existence of written Hebrew commandments at Khirbet Qeiyafa suggested that the peoples at the site were following the commands found in the Old Testament scriptures. Professor Yosef Garfinkel has now confirmed through archeological excavation that at least some of the Old Testament commandments were being followed at Khirbet Qeiyafa by the 10th century B.C. The city was violently destroyed in 980 B.C. (according to 14C dating). More...
