      • 206 representatives said that the current policy, instituted by Bush in August 2001, "have slowed potentially lifesaving research" (4/30/04)
      • 58 Senators (including 14 Republicans) called for President Bush to reverse his ESC policy (6/4/04)

Both houses of Congress have asked President Bush to review his policy on embryonic stem cell research. President Bush released a statement reiterating his moral qualms about creating human embryos to destroy them, and refused to reverse the federal policy banning government funding of ESC research (other than for ESC lines established before the funding ban).
